As part of efforts to promote climate-smart agriculture and empower local farmers, Mr. Geoffrey Malimwengu, a Senior Agronomist and Consultant for Save the Needy Tanzania, conducted a supportive supervision visit at Mt. Maria Goretti Agriculture Training Institute, Mazombe, Iula, Iringa, on November 12, 2023. This visit was a key component of the Kilimo na Vijana Project, which aims to equip youth and women with essential Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) skills, ensuring their active participation and success in the agricultural sector.
During the visit, Mr. Malimwengu provided hands-on training in climate-smart irrigation technologies, focusing on efficient water management for horticultural farming to enhance crop yields, improve soil health, and increase resilience to climate change. He engaged agriculture trainees, farm practitioners, and local farmers, demonstrating precision irrigation, organic farming techniques, and sustainable water conservation methods. The session emphasized the importance of adopting climate-smart farming approaches, including drought-resistant crop varieties, integrated pest management, and soil regeneration techniques, which are vital for ensuring food security, economic stability, and sustainable rural livelihoods.
Save the Needy Tanzania remains committed to empowering smallholder farmers through capacity-building initiatives, innovative agricultural solutions, and access to modern climate-smart farming technologies. The Kilimo na Vijana Project, with its specific focus on youth and women, plays a crucial role in enhancing resilience to climate change, reducing poverty, and improving nutrition and economic opportunities in rural areas.
